ABOUT THE PROJECT

In light of the recent murders of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, George Floyd, David McAtee, Rayshard Brooks, and countless others, the Community Engagement House has created the Allyship in Action Project with the help of University faculty, staff, administrators, and students.

To spur white students to action and greater self-awareness, the CoHo has asked Sewanee's faculty and staff to record short video clips of themselves explaining key concepts and action items for how to be anti-Racist. This is a toolkit that was primed and prepared--with love!-- by your professors, mentors, and peers. Think of it less as another remote-learning lesson, and more so as a friendly fireside chat (or, for all the Youtube fans, a vlog session) with your favorite teacher. The Allyship in Action Project aims to lead by demonstration. While we have left space for those identifying as Black, Indigenous, or People of Color (BIPOC) to offer their thoughts, we hope to educate the white students of Sewanee with the help of white faculty and staff rather than continuing the age-old adage of relying on our BIPOC folk to carry the burden of dismantling race and racism.

We offer these resources to you in the hopes that you may review and watch the videos on your own time. To answer any questions you may have from the video clips or about allyship in general, there will be a Q&A session on June, 26 at 2 p.m. CST. Sign up on the "Live Q&A" tab for the Webinar link. If you would like to submit a question anonymously, please fill out the Google Form also available on the "Live Q&A" tab.

The Q&A session will be hosted by Dr. Sean O'Rourke and Dr. Andrea Mansker. Once the Q&A is over, a recorded version will be uploaded on the website alongside the videos. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, we can be reached at leveqbj0@sewanee.edu and huangje0@sewanee.edu.

With love, gratitude, and power,
